Siracusa (Ortigia)

It was around seven in the evening when I arrived in Siracusa. I parked the car in one of the garages along the Lungomare di Levante Elio Vittorini on the island of Ortigia. You can reach this island via a short bridge that separates this historic center from the rest of Siracusa. After parking the car, I walked along Via Trento and at one point came across the Tempio di Apollo, one of Siracusa's most important monuments.

Then I walked to the Porta Marina, the harbour where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets.

Before the sun set I visited the Piazza Duomo, which, especially at that time of day, has a magical effect with its 15th century marble floors that have approximately the same whitish color as the buildings. It looks like a huge ballroom, one of the most beautiful and elegant squares I have ever seen. What makes this square so unique is its ancient and complex history. Every rock, every column and even the floor tells about different peoples, cultures and times. Other monuments that, in addition to Piazza Duomo with its beautiful Baroque Cathedral, are also interesting to see: Fonte Aretusa, Piazza Archimede, Castello Maniace.

If you have time and want to do some shopping, go to Corso Giacomo Matteotti. Recommended restaurants are La Tavernetta da Piero and Sicily in Tavola. Ice cream lovers can then go to Voglia Matta on Corso Umberto I for delicious ice cream, immediately past the bridge if you come from Ortigia. Ortigia is also very nice if you want to go out for an evening; even in April, there were quite a few people.

After this beautiful evening in the city I went back to my stay, the quietly located Agriturismo Sant'Elia, where you only hear the birds chirping. The owner is very friendly and likes to chat with her guests in the morning. The agritourism is ideally located between Siracusa and Noto, a 20-minute drive from Siracusa and 30 minutes from Noto. The beach is also a 15-minute drive away.

The next day I went to the archaeological park of Siracusa, where the second-largest Greek amphitheatre is located. During my visit, they were already preparing for the performances that take place in the summer months.

In addition to the Greek theater, you will also find interesting sights here such as Grotta dei Cordari, l'Orecchio di Dionisio, l'Ara di Ierone and of course the Roman amphitheater. In the area, you should definitely visit the Catacomba di San Giovanni.

After a visit to the archaeological park, you can visit Bar Leonardi for a tasty Cannolo Siciliano, a cold crema di caffè or something else tasty.
