SPA, and the real Maremma

Saturnia and the thermal baths

Saturnia is a small spa town situated on a hill overlooking the hot springs, located near the ruins of an Etruscan necropolis, along the Roman road Clodia, also known as Via delle Terme, between Via Cassia and Via Aurelia.
The name Saturnia comes from the roman God Saturn. Legend has it that during times of war, Saturn sent a lightning bolt to the earth, which gave rise to the hot springs. These water springs were believed to bring peace among humanity.

The ancient origins of Saturnia are still visible today, such as the beautiful Roman portal from the 2nd century BC that provides entrance through the old city walls, built by the Aldobrandeschi family. What is particularly renowned about Saturnia is its spa with thermal baths. It comprises a number of springs that cover a significant portion of the Monte Amiata hills. These waters were highly valued by the ancient Romans for their therapeutic and healing properties.
The average temperature of the springs is 37.5 degrees Celsius. In addition to these thermal baths, there are also fitness centers.
Saturnia and its thermal baths are a prized asset of the Maremma region in Tuscany. The wild landscape and glorious history of this area make it an excellent vacation destination.
