Castiglione della Pescaia / Costa degli Etruschi

along the Tuscan coast

Castiglione della Pescaia

Approximately 20 km from Grosseto lies one of the most picturesque medieval villages on the Tuscan coast: Castiglione della Pescaia.
It is today a well-known tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches, clean sea, and fully equipped resorts. This village has repeatedly been awarded prizes by the Touring Club.
The village is situated on a hill with a view of the Buna River. The historic center is well-preserved, with buildings like the 18th-century church of Santa Maria del Giglio, located near a bastion with medieval walls. The 16th-century church of St. John the Baptist features a semi-circular portal, a bas-relief, and an early medieval round tower that is naturally remarkable. Just outside the town is the 18th-century Red House, where you can also visit the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve. On the way from Marina di Grosseto to Castiglione, you'll find the unique Pineta Tombolo, spanning 10 km along the coast.

Costa degli Etruschi
In addition to its hills and vast landscapes, Tuscany has a breathtaking coastline that offers much to explore.
The stretch between Livorno and Populonia is called the "Costa degli Etruschi." This is where the ancient Etruscans lived 1000 years ago. It is known for its seafood restaurants; "Cacciucco" is a delicious fish soup and an absolute must-try.

In the renowned Bolgheri region, you'll find the wine estates of Montescudaio DOC, producing well-known wine brands like Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and other high-quality labels. Castagneto Carducci is a famous area where the renowned Italian poet Giosue Carducci comes from.
The hilly Val di Cornia lies between the rocks of Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima. The favorable location between the coast and the hills influences the rich flavor of the olive oil and wine from this region.
Marina di Bibbona is surrounded by a dense forest along the coast. It's a top destination for international tourists who love relaxation while also being interested in sports and games.
Populonia was one of the most important centers in antiquity. At this site, the ancient Etruscans worked and traded iron and metal. At the top of the hill, surrounded by the sea, the village offers a splendid view. The medieval walls and the castle from the first half of the 20th century have small passageways, shops, and a museum about the lives of the Etruscans and Romans.
Populonia is connected to the Gulf of Baratti, and it hosts one of the most significant remains from Etruscan antiquity, with an archaeological park and the necropolis of San Cerbone. The Gulf of Baratti is undoubtedly the most beautiful section along the Tuscan coast.
