Dali's birthplace

The name Figueres means “fig tree”. In the past these trees were scattered around town. Figueres is located next to Girona and is much loved by tourists as they consider it to be a very interesting destination. This town has many museums such as the famous Dalí museum; the toy museum with its wide variety of items for all ages; and the Empordà museum with its archeological collection, medieval and contemporary art. Culturally, Figueres offers a display on the streets of town through its rich architectural historic centre. The nice thing about Figueres is that you do not have to be a Dalí fan to visit the town as there is more to see visit such as the castle, the town’s architecture, the food and wine. But if you choose to visit the Dali museum, you will surely find it magical.

Dalí museum
The artist Dalí had a unique relationship with Figueres as it was his birthplace and also the town where he passed away. The Dalí Theatre-Museum is an artwork from outside, and inside you can expect a large collection of Dalí’s art. Without a doubt it is the most important attraction in town. It was built as a theatre in the 19th century and it can be considered to be Dalí’s latest piece. It was opened in 1974 and Dalí is buried under the dome, which was his wish in 1989. Most of the paintings hanging in this Theatre-Museum are dedicated to Gala; Dali's wife and his greatest inspiration.

Shopping Figueres
Figueres is not only the home to the Dalí museum, but also the perfect town to shop. There are many charming streets and corners filled with shops and boutiques that lead to the famous Rambla of Plaza Ayuntamiento. Figueres is a seductive spot with an interesting mixture of old and new. On one hand there are mainline high street brands such as Zara, Mango and H&M and on the other hand there are small boutiques with local clothing and products.
