The Vendicari Nature Reserve is now one of the most important humid areas in Europe, its significance from a naturalistic standpoint being internationally recognized.
In the Vendicari Nature Reserve, hundreds of bird species choose this place as a stopover on their way to their breeding grounds every year. The reserve is also one of the few places where it's still possible to admire the typical Mediterranean flora in all its glory. The "Tonnara," which was in use until World War II, is also worth a visit.
The Pantalica Necropolis is one of the most significant prehistoric areas in Sicily and it is important to understand the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age on the island.
The original inhabitants of Pantalica were referred to as "Siculi" by ancient writers. The most impressive feature is the necropolis with 5,000 tombs carved into the rock walls of the canyon formed by the Anapo and Bottiglieri rivers. This vast prehistoric burial ground is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Marzamemi is a charming fishing village. The name comes from "Marsa al-Hamam," which means "Pigeon Bay," as these small birds rest in Marzamemi during their migration.
