the capital of West Sicily

Trapani

Trapani is situated on a peninsula forming a natural harbor; it is one of the main centers of italian fishing and it is also known for the production of coral and pearls.
The salt flats (Saline) are one of the most interesting wetland areas in Europe, protected by the WWF and serving as a natural habitat for birds, characterized by windmills that are no longer in use.
The best time of the year to visit Trapani is during Easter, when the old city becomes the setting for festivities that take place throughout the week. The highlight is the mystery of the Good Friday procession, during which statues are carried through the streets of the center day and night. These are kept in the Church of Purgatory (Chiesa del Purgatorio) and were crafted by local artisans between 1650 and 1720 using wood, fabric, and glue.
