The City of Fairytales

Sintra will definitety enchant you. Looking at pictures of the Palácio da Pena will probably make you think “this cannot be real?”. Well, it is! Ever since the Middle Ages, this castle has been an important landmark. It has not always looked like this, when the castle was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1755, the Palace had to be completely rebuilt. The result is this brightly coloured, almost unbelievably beautiful castle. The details are amazing, not only on the outside but also on the inside. You can enter the castle and see some beautiful rooms, and even a small charming chapel. The view is also amazing, you are so high in the mountains you are almost surrounded by little clouds. Beware of the weather through, Sintra has a very peculiar climate. It can be rainy and the next ten minutes the sky can be blue with the sun shining brightly. Sintra does have other beautiful highlights. Did you know that the end of the world is located in Sintra? The Cabo do Roca is the most Western point of Europe and people actually used to think that the world just ended there. Another breathtaking castle is the Quinta de Regaleira, a massive Gothic house surrounded by beautiful gardens. Here you can also find the famous spiral staircase, just try not to get dizzy! Sintra also has a Moorish Castle, high on top of the mountains, other must sees are definitely Monserrate palace, but also the historical center itself!
