Tariva, the “Portuguese Venice”, used to be an important Moorish trading place. You can still visit the ruins of the Moorish castle that used to be an important place for the defence of the city, with an amazing view over the town, or have a look at the Igreja the Santa Maria. This actually used to be a mosque, but was turned into a church after the Reconquista. Walk along the Praca da Republica, originally a market square. Immerse yourself into the Portuguese lifestyle by having a look at the Mercado Minicipal, and buy some local fish or other local products.
On the “Island of Tavira”, you can sunbathe on the 10km long sandy beach! You can choose between the popular ones, including the Beach of Tavira, or one of the calmer ones. You can even go horseback riding on one of Tavira’s deserted beaches! From Tavira you can also visit the Parque Natural da Ria Famosa, salt lagoons with some impressive wild life.
