Portalegre district

Representing the Renaissance of Portugal

Portalegre, near the border of Spain, is a city with a rich history. The investment in textiles made this a prosperous city during the Renaissance, and this can still be seen as you walk through the city. You will encounter many Baroque and Renaissance buildings, but also an old castle, and even an authentic tapestry factory in the former Rossio Jesuit monastery. Also visit the beautiful Sé (Cathedral) of the city, or see the Igjesa do Convento de Saõ Francisco. You can also easily make trips from this town to the beautiful Serra de Saõ Mamede Natural Park or the village of Crato.
