a terrace on Valle d'Orcia

In the province of Siena, in the vicinity of Val d'Orcia, lies the town of Pienza; a place rich in natural and artistic treasures that make it popular among tourists. The historic center of this town is considered an artistic and cultural heritage.
Pienza was rebuilt during the Renaissance by the order of Pope Pius II Piccolomini, who wanted to give his birthplace the appearance of a utopian city, meant to embody the ideal of a place that would preserve peace among people.
The charm of the Renaissance is abundantly visible here. Pienza is one of the five villages, along with Castiglion d'Orcia, Montalcino, San Quirico d'Orcia, and Radicofani, that belong to the artistic and natural cultural park of Val d'Orcia. This area has been designed according to a territorial system to protect the heritage of this rich region and the towns of Val d'Orcia.
Among the local products of Pienza, we recommend the Val di Chiana olive oil, served with bruschetta, tomatoes, and Pecorino cheese, a soft sheep cheese known as a culinary specialty.
The best traditional dishes are appetizers or toasted bread, often filled with mushrooms from Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia.
Regarding pasta, we suggest trying panzanelle with pici sauce: homemade spaghetti or the famous pappardelle with a hearty sauce. Additionally, we recommend the renowned white wine of Val di Chiana or the Nobile di Montepulciano, a red wine that pairs well with meat dishes.
