The Necropolis of Pantalica is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Sicily, useful to understand the moment of transition from the Bronze to the Iron Age in the island. The name derives from the Marsa al-Hamam, which means "Bay of the Doves", since in Marzamemi these small birds rest during migration.??The village has developed around the warf, then became a fishing port, and has grown thanks to the latter activity, still widely practiced of tuna fishing, of the most important acitivities in Sicily.
