Piazza Armerina, Villa romana del Casale

and the wonderful mosaic.

Villa Romana del Casale

Villa Romana del Casale is a late Roman villa whose ruins are located near Piazza Armerina in Sicily. The mosaics with their unique richness and variety make the Villa a precious gem in art history. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.
Many rooms of the villa have floors made of coloured mosaics and there are clear stylistic differences among them.
However, this does not necessarily mean they were created in different eras, but rather that different craftsmen followed different styles.
Various archaeologists believe the villa belonged to high-ranking individuals in the hierarchy of the Roman Empire (such as consuls), while others believe that the villa belonged to the emperor M. Valerius Maximianus, also known as Victor Herculeos.
