Termoli and Sant'Angelo Limosano

Special villages to discover

Termoli:
The old town of Termoli has medieval origins and is situated on a promontory along the Adriatic coast. It is dominated by the imposing bulk of Castle Federico. This fortress, with its simple and austere architecture, was built in the eleventh century and was located in an area completely fortified with walls and watchtowers. In addition to the Castle, another symbol of the city in the old town of Termoli is the Cathedral of St. Basso. Founded in the twelfth century on the remains of earlier churches, the Cathedral is one of the finest examples of a Romanesque church in the region. The facade resembles a hut and the lower part is adorned with a series of blind arches, while the interior features three naves and an apse. One of the unique attractions is the Trabucchi, tools once used by fishermen to hoist their nets after fishing.
Sant’Angelo Limosano:
For those who enjoy discovering authentic villages in Southern Italy, away from mass tourism, a visit to Sant'Angelo Limosano is a must. With a population of 355 residents, it is situated at an elevation of 900 meters above sea level, at the foot of castle ruins. Sant'Angelo Limosano offers panoramic views that encompass the Tremiti Islands and the peaks of the Maiella Range. In the town, you can visit the parish church and the ancient "Chiesa di S. Pier Celestino," which was transformed into a barn by order of Cardinal Orsini in 1695. Equally, noteworthy is the "Fonte di S. Pietro," which, after a dry winter, begins to flow again before the feast of Sant'Angelo's patron saint on May 19th. In addition to the feast day of Sant'Angelo's patron saint, villagers celebrate the "Madonna delle Stelle" on August 22nd. For those who appreciate conviviality, August 18th is the village feast of "Pezzate e Fasciuole" (pasta and beans). The local cuisine is simple but extremely tasty, with dishes worth sampling including grilled lamb with potatoes (cooked in the embers), pasta with beans, and truffle pizza.
