Split is Dalmatia's largest city and a historical site founded around the 1700-year-old palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. The entire city center is part of the cultural heritage of UNESCO, but Split is not a museum city; it is truly a unique, vibrant place of mind. The historic center of Split is located in the Diocletian's Palace, with narrow streets where ancient Rome, the Middle Ages and modernity converge and visitors see examples of ancient architecture (such as the colonnade), Romanesque churches, medieval Gothic palaces, Renaissance portals of noble houses, baroque facades and modern architecture.
