the most famous volcano in Europe

Mount Vesuvius is the most famous volcano globally and one of the most extensively studied. It's a classic example of a volcano shaped like a cone, with Monte Somma (1133 meters) forming the outer structure. The walls of its crater have mostly disappeared, revealing a smaller cone inside, known as Vesuvius (1281 meters). This smaller cone is separated from a lower area known as Valle del Gigante, which is a part of the caldera, and is believed to be the source of the eruption in 79 AD.
Vesuvius holds a significant place in the history of volcanology due to the eruption in 79 AD, which destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Stabiae, Herculaneum, and their surroundings, burying them under ash and lava.
Together with the Phlegraean Fields, Vesuvius is the only active mainland volcano in Europe. All other volcanoes are located on islands.
Since October 29th of 2005, Mount Vesuvius has been transformed into an outdoor museum featuring 10 large sculptures. The permanent exhibition is called "Creator Vesuvius." One of these sculptures was crafted by the Dutch artist Mark Brusse.
