Tropea, Pizzo Calabro

the Mediterranean coast: sea, art, food

Tropea

Tropea can be divided into two parts: the upper portion, considered the "true" part, and the lower part, "La marina," located close to the sea and the port. The town itself (the upper part) is built on a rock overlooking the sea, at an elevation of about 50/60 meters above sea level.
The city is characterized by narrow streets, squares, and surprising sea views with its intense turquoise color. High above an enormous sandstone rock, you can find 18th-century buildings with beautifully carved portals, while below, a 4-kilometer-long coastline with small beaches lies at your feet. All of this has contributed to Tropea becoming one of the most important centers in Calabria and a favorite among tourists.
A short distance from Tropea is Capo Vaticano: one of the most well-known seaside resorts in Calabria due to its emerald green waters, rich in coral and beautiful shells. Along the Coast of the Gods, Capo Vaticano is a rocky plateau consisting of several bays and beaches, including the stunning bay of Grotticelle. The traditional dishes of Tropea are also worth mentioning, such as Cipolla rossa di Tropea (red onion), Fileja (a type of pasta dish), 'Nduja (spicy spreadable sausage), extra virgin olive oil, peperoncino (red chili pepper), and, of course, the delicious ice cream.

Pizzo Calabro
Pizzo Calabro is a village with about 9,000 inhabitants, located on a slope 44 meters above sea level in the province of Vibo Valentia. The village still retains the appearance of a typical fishing village, with narrow streets leading to small courtyards, balconies overlooking the sea, and not to forget, the beaches and cliffs. The economy relies on fishing and tuna processing, but also the rapidly developing tourism sector is contributing more and more.
