Polignano a Mare

Polignano a Mare is beautifully situated on a rocky promontory 24 meters above sea level. The natural cave, the historic center, and the remains from Roman times have particular importance. The Roman bridge of Via Traiana can be reached through a deep inlet north of the center, called Monachile Lama, because monk seals used to inhabit it.
The San Vito church, located in a small square in the center, was a cathedral until 1818 when the small diocese of Polignano was merged with that of Monopoli. Inside, you can admire artworks from the 17th and 18th centuries by the sculptor Stefano da Putignano. In the village of San Vito, towards the north, behind the harbor, you can find the imposing abbey of the Benedictines.
