the capital of Amalfi Coast

The legend goes that Amalfi was founded as a declaration of love by Hercules, the son of Zeus, to his beloved. The woman who captured Hercules' heart had bright blue eyes and was called Amalfi. Perhaps, this is the only myth, but the true story behind its origins is so ancient that its roots are likely to be found in Roman times.

Amalfi is a small town in the province of Salerno, with no more than 5,500 inhabitants in 2005. Salerno strongly influenced Amalfi's history and culture. Since 1997, Amalfi has been included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. The city has several remarkable attractions, including the splendid Duomo and the paper museum.

The sea where the city is located was its main source of income. Important trade relations took place from here between former Byzantium and Egypt.
Amalfi is primarily known for its lemon trees, the "Sfusato Amalfi," which cover all the gardens in the city and the entire Amalfi coast. The famous Limoncello liqueur is made from the large and fragrant lemons. Although the liqueur has its traditions along the Amalfi coast, the title of its origin is disputed in the nearby Capri and Sorrento.
