Italy - Sardinia

Discover Sardinia far from mass tourism

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (the largest being Sicily) and is known as a paradise for beach lovers: stunning coastlines, white sandy beaches, and crystal-clear dark blue to turquoise waters. Besides its beautiful beaches, it has a history dating back thousands of years, much of which remains undiscovered.
Sardinia is likely the most untouched region in Italy, where pure nature has remained almost intact because industrialization never developed strongly here. In some areas, you can find wild horses (I cavallini della Giara), monk seals have been spotted, and the Gennargentu mountains, rich in flora and fauna like mouflons (small wild sheep), golden eagles, and Sardinian deer, are exceptionally unique.
Not only the nature is remarkable, but the food is exceptional and is known as a gastronomic paradise. What you shouldn't miss:
  • Casizolu (cheese) and Casu marzu (literally, rotten cheese),
  • Pane carasau (crispy bread, often eaten with casu marzu),
  • Porceddu (roasted pig),
  • Gamberi Rossi di Alghero (red shrimp from Alghero),
  • Bottarga (a fish delicacy made from fish eggs),
  • Culurgiones ogliastrini (ravioli with potato and cheese).
Of course, the unique wines are a part of this, such as the famous Cannonau or Mirto, a sweet dessert wine made from myrtle. A true Sardinian aperitif consists of Crocchias with a beer.
Sardinia boasts 1 UNESCO World Heritage site:
  • Nuraghe Barumini
Fun fact: With a population of 1.6 million, Sardinia has the highest percentage of people over a hundred years old!
