Ancona and Monte Conero

The solitary limestone peak of Monte Conero and beautiful beaches

Ancona is the administrative capital of Marche and the largest city in the region. The oldest part of town is called Colle Guasco, the hill above the port. On its peak, high above the hustle and bustle of the modern city, stands Ancona's finest church, the Medieval Cathedral of San Ciriaco, an extraordinarily pleasing mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Ancona also hosts some beautiful medieval palaces and the interesting Museo Archeologico delle Marche.
Once in Ancona, you can't miss the two most typical and famous dishes: Ancona stockfish (stoccafisso all'anconetana) and "brodetto" (fish stew). A glass of Rosso Conero (local red wine) is highly recommended.
Just south of Ancona rises the solitary limestone peak of Monte Conero, where its steep slopes descend to the sea, offering some of the prettiest beaches on the entire Northern Adriatic shore, including Portonovo, Sirolo, and Numana.
Along the bay, which is often crowded, you'll find a few restaurants with breathtaking view balconies serving fish dishes. The "Della Vela" beach is a spectacular spot with a rock formation that resembles a sail. It's a free public beach located at the very end of the southern slope of the bay. The beach of Mezzavalle adds a touch of wilderness and natural beauty to the charms of the bay.
Sirolo also boasts the Conero Golf Club, the finest golf course in the region, catering to golfers.
To the north of Ancona, the sandy beach of Palombina is more suitable for both children and families.
