The capital of the Costa del Sol

Malaga remained backstage for a long time amongst the Andalucian spotlights but has become more culturally and historically renown just recently. The city can be compared to Barcelona in terms of the buzz and fine dining, and to Madrid regarding art and museums. An interesting fact is that in 2016 Malaga won the ‘European Capital of Culture’ award. Beautiful churches, cathedrals museums such as the Museo Picasso Malaga, The Basilica y Real Santuario de Santa Maria de la Victoria are must-sees in Malaga. The Picasso Museum is coincidentally the artist’s birth house, and the locals are very proud to communicate this fact. Other interesting museums are the Museo Carmen Thyssen, the Glass Crystal Museum, the Malaga Automobile Museum and the Wine Museum (‘Museo de Vino’). Malaga has been renovated with style and bars and shops ranging from urban to chic styles surround the gothic cathedral. The port has also been done up nicely with a cruise ship seafront line-up. From the Arabic influenced castle called ‘Gibralfaro’ at the peak of the city; one can enjoy panoramic views of Malaga and the extended Andalusian coastline. Gibralfaro is connected to the lower fortress called ‘Alcazaba’. Historically the city endured a long Moorish siege, and later served as a battlefield during the Spanish Civil War.
