City of the 44 churches

Maratea

Maratea is a beautiful town in the Basilicata region, stretching over 30 km along the Tyrrhenian Sea with the Gulf of Policastro. Located on Mount San Biagio, the town overlooks a stunning stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea and is an ideal destination for those seeking a holiday of relaxation, beaches, Italian taste, and culture. Situated halfway between Campania and Calabria, Maratea offers the unique opportunity to simultaneously enjoy rolling hills, mountains, and the sea!
The blue sea and the green of the typical Mediterranean vegetation meet the rocky cliffs, surrounding beautiful beaches in the Acquafredda, Cersuta, Fiumicello, the Black Beach, the Shoals, Castrocucco areas.
The old town boasts a rich concentration of historic buildings, including many churches, which is why Maratea is also known as "the city of the 44 churches."
Don't miss a unique climbing experience on Mount San Biagio to see Maratea's most significant monument, the 22-meter-high statue of Christ the Redeemer, constructed in 1965 atop the mountain and covered with white cement and Carrara marble.
