Valle d'Itria - Alberobello, Martina Franca, Cisternino, Locorotondo

the land of Trulli

Alberobello

Alberobello is situated in the heart of the Valle dei Trulli. It is a picturesque tourist and agricultural spot, founded in the 15th century by the Counts of Acquaviva. It is known for its many trulli, which have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996 due to their architectural significance.
Alberobello boasts around 1,500 trulli of various shapes and sizes. The town's ground is made up of different layers of limestone that have contributed to the unique building material that sets Alberobello apart.
Locorotondo
Locorotondo is one of the most beautiful towns in Italy.
From the Latin "locus rotundus" meaning round place, is a medieval name that clearly refers to the round shape of the hill on which the village is built. Of note are the Church of the Greek Madonna (a national monument) and the church dedicated to Saint George the Martyr, dating back to 1578.

Martina Franca
Martina Franca is an elegant hilltop town in the southeastern part of the Murgia region, overlooking the charming Valle d'Itria, surrounded by greenery and trulli. The main attraction of the town is undoubtedly its unique historical center, a splendid example of Baroque art, with narrow streets, white alleyways, stately buildings, and monumental churches. The captivating landscape is characterized by ancient "casedde," the famous trulli, and typical farmhouses.

Cisternino
Cisternino is a beautiful town perched atop a hill, overlooking the Valle d’Itria and the coast. The houses in the old center feature typical eastern elements, with hidden courtyards and exterior staircases. Cisternino offers a unique view over the rural surroundings of the valley with trulli. Worth visiting are: the Cathedral of San Nicola, of Roman origin, built on the remains of a primitive crypt of Basilian monks, the Sanctuary of Madonna d'Ibernia, and the Torre di Porta Grande of Norman origin.
