city of the two seas

Taranto

"City of the Two Seas": This is how Taranto is called due to its position that divides the open sea into two parts (Mar Grande & Mar Piccolo).
The canal that unites them is crowned by the famous swing bridge, behind which lies the heart of ancient Taranto, a medieval village with the Cathedral of San Cataldo, the Aragonese Castle, and many other remnants that tell the city's ancient origins.
The 'city of the two seas' is also a 'city with two faces' because beyond the bridge lies the new Taranto, a city that grew around the 19th-century village overlooking the banks of the waterway. Here is located the National Archaeological Museum, known for the wealth and rarity of the artifacts on display.
Along the coast, there are many beautiful places for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation, where you can dive into the clear waters of the Ionian Sea or sunbathe on the fine white sands of the long shorelines.
However, the sea is not the only attraction of this land. The province of Taranto is characterized by extraordinary nature. Sometimes green and lush with large vineyards and olive trees, and sometimes rocky and rugged with canyons, caves, and crevices.
In the province of Taranto, you can also find Martina Franca, a beautiful town overlooking the Itria Valley, where the baroque architecture of the old town is surrounded by the lush greenery of nature, contrasted by the whiteness of the trulli and ancient farmhouses.
